Advanced Life Support (ALS)

This course provides participants with the following skills and knowledge:

  • an understanding of, and practical competence in both basic life support (including CPR, etc) and advanced life support with a focus on issues a rural practitioner might encounter
  • competence in airway management techniques, including basic airway manoeuvres such as Guedel airway, bag and mask, oxygen therapy, and more advanced airway manoeuvres such as the use of laryngeal mask or intubation
  • demonstrated ability to efficiently use a manual defibrillator and an automated external defibrillator (AED) 
  • demonstrated ability to identify and manage basic life threatening arrhythmias such as VF and VT, and
  • competence in intravenous access or intraosseous access and have understanding of the administration of drugs in resuscitation, in particular the dose and frequency.

Rural Emergency Obstetrics Training (REOT)

This workshop gives non-obstetrics doctors the skills needed to deal with obstetric emergencies that may arise in their practice. You'll learn from a team of three practicing rural GP obstetricians and three experienced midwives.

The practical workshop covers scenarios such as:

  • vaginal birth
  • breech
  • shoulder dystocia
  • postpartum haemorrhage
  • patient transfer.

Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine

This workshop will introduce you to the use of Ultrasound in emergency practice for the rural general or generalist practitioner. The workshop uses 'hands-on' practice using live patient models, guided by highly experienced specialists, sonographers and clinicians.
The program covers:

  • Basic physics of ultrasound and knobology
  • General uses of ultrasound in Emergency Medicine/Trauma/Critical care

Rural Emergency Skills Training (REST)

When practising in a rural or remote setting, you have a lot on your plate, from being the first on the scene at a trauma to looking after a child with a serious illness.

That's why we offer you a two-day Rural Emergency Skills Training (REST) course, with a program that will equip you with a structured approach, understanding and practical experience of handling many of the most common rural practice skills and emergency scenarios.

This course:

  • improves your knowledge and confidence of emergency presentations
  • enhances specific skills related to the initial assessment and stabilisation of emergency presentations
  • teaches manual skills applicable to the management of emergency presentations
  • Brings about a change in attitude and approach to emergency presentations in practice
  • Helps you identify ways that you can continue to practice and prepare for future emergency presentations
  • generates confidence in the use of principles and skills in emergency care by use of simulation scenarios.
