This session will provide an understanding of what happens in thunderstorm asthma and what proactive steps can be taken to reduce the impact on people within the community who are at risk.

Clinical Workshop : Understanding and preventing thunderstorm asthma
Biography
Professor Amanda Barnard is Associate Dean (Rural Clinical School and Indigenous Health) at the Australian National University Medical School. She is the Foundation Head of the Rural Clinical School, and directs an innovative rural health program with student clinical placements in all 4 years of the medical course. An awarded teacher and educator, Professor Barnard’s academic interests lie in medical education, the changing demands and nature of the primary care workforce, and chronic disease in primary care, particularly chronic respiratory disease. She has chaired the Guidelines Committee for the Australian Asthma Handbook since 2010, and is a member of the AIHW National Asthma and Other Chronic Respiratory Conditions Monitoring Advisory Group.
Professor Barnard continues to work as a GP in rural NSW, and serves on a number of state, national and international bodies with education, training, rural workforce and health system briefs. She is currently a member of the Canberra Region Medical Education Council and immediate past Chair of FRAME and the Wonca Working Party on Women and Family Medicine.
