Overview

Session 1. Workshop. The diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of concussion in sport can be difficult and particularly challenging in rural and remote areas. The workshops will consist of a didactic presentation and a case study discussion of a concussion injury in a rural setting of Australian Rules football. There will be an opportunity to debate the appropriate subsequent management of the patient including return to the field of play (45 mins)

Biography

David Maddocks has been a practising solicitor in Melbourne for 20 years. He is currently a partner of Perry Maddocks Trollope Lawyers, who are a panel law firm for the Medical Indemnity Protection Society (MIPS). David has worked in the medical defence jurisdiction on behalf of MIPS and its members for almost 20 years, representing them in civil litigation, Medical Board complaints and Coronial Inquests. David graduated in Law with Honours in 1996 and won the Supreme Court Exhibition Prize awarded by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for his Honours Thesis on serious injury claims in Victoria. He is an accredited specialist in personal injury with the Law Institute of Victoria. He is a Tribunal Member on the AFL’s Grievance Tribunal. He was a Tribunal Member on the State Government’s Intellectual Disability Review Panel. He is a Board Member of Cricket Victoria. Prior to practise in law, he qualified as a neuropsychologist and worked in brain injury rehabilitation at the Epworth Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital. He completed a Ph.D. at the University of Melbourne in 1996, investigating the cognitive effects of concussion in Australian Rules footballers. Aspects of his research have been adopted by many international sporting organisations including the NFL, IOC, FIFA and Cricket Australia. David remains active in clinical research and is presently conducting follow-up studies, in association with the Florey Institute, of AFL footballers he first tested over 25 years ago. He is a co-author of International Consensus Statements on Concussion in Sport. He is a member of the AFL Concussion Working Group and has presented on concussion in sport to various groups of doctors and lawyers, including the Judges of the Victorian Supreme Court.
