Overview

This panel hopes to engage in a conversation to outline the current challenges medical students and junior doctors face in our hospital systems around the country, and aim to generate ideas by which junior doctors can stay resilient in an increasingly challenging work environment. (90 mins)

Abstract

Biography

Dr Justin Azzopardi is a resident medical officer currently based at Redlands Hospital, Queensland. Originally from Kurrimine Beach in rural North Queensland he moved to the city to study at James Cook University. He aims to continue to build upon ACRRM's commitment to advocating for not only effective rural medical training, but also an overall improvement of the health and wellbeing of Australians in rural and remote areas. As a council member, he hopes to invest time promoting a range of initiatives that aim to ensure that medical students and junior doctors who have a strong commitment to rural training and the rural workforce have clear pathways to follow toward rural practice. Junior medical officers and medical students are an integral part of any college.

Biography

Dr Tori Berquist is a current JMO at the Alfred Hospital interested in how teams, individuals and work roles intersect in medical workplaces to influence mental health. She has a keen interest in the mental health of health professionals both in Australia and abroad, having worked as Mental Health Program Coordinator for the International Federation of Medical Students Associations as a student, and has worked with universities to restructure support systems in order to embrace the unique challenges of the medical workplace.

Biography

Dr Tim Kelly has spent most of his working life in rural South Australia. In addition to working in full scope rural generalist practice, he has worked extensively in education and supervision of registrars and junior doctors. In addition to rural locum work and management roles, he currently is closely involved in the SAVES telemedicine service with the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency and is involved in running the Road to Rural intern placements in South Australia. Dr Kelly is a former Board member of ACRRM and NRHA.

Biography

Dr Daria Domanik is a rural generalist pathway trainee in PGY4 who is currently working in Indigenous Health in Mossman Gorge with the Apunipima Primary Health Care Clinic. Daria has completed an advanced skill in paediatrics in Townsville Hospital last year. She is interested in population health and is due to complete a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine through James Cook University this year. In future Daria wishes to go on to do a PhD in paediatric and tropical medicine as well as population health and to eventually do non-governmental organisation based work around the world.
