This session aims to provide an opportunity for rural doctors and prospective rural doctors to reflect and share insights on meeting the challenges of addressing domestic violence in their communities and particularly the challenges unique to practice in rural and remote areas. (90 mins)

Biography

Chris Carroll is a Rural General Practitioner, currently based in Parkes, NSW. She has over 30 years experience working in rural and remote locations from the Kimberley to Norfolk Island to the NSW Central West. Chris has been a leading developer of the College's assessment program since its inception in 2007, and continues to support the College within that area.

Biography

Jennifer Delima is a “rural / remote generalist” medical practitioner and specialist in Addiction and Clinical forensic medicine. She is currently the Director of Clinical Forensic and Addiction medicine for the Central Australia Health Service in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. From a background in mainstream Emergency medical practice in Sydney, she has since 2000 had the privilege of working in a range of differing clinical and social environments in the Northern Territory. These have included remote Australian Aboriginal communities, remote and regional hospitals and general practices as well as Custodial health caring for both adolescents and adults. This work environment and attendant community engagement has provided her with significant exposure to the challenges in delivery of holistic health care especially in the context of domestic and family violence and trauma.

Biography

Dr Bill Liley FACRRM FRACGP DRANZCOG Dr Bill Liley is a Rural Generalist specializing in women’s and children’s health working in both Hopevale and Cooktown in far-north Queensland. Bill is a prominent spokesperson on issues related to Family and Domestic Violence. He is a strong advocate for preventive and health education approaches and promotes the Purple Crying initiative toward protecting children through improved mental health support for new parents. He has presented Ted Talks on Domestic Violence prevention and has established a men’s health education program with Aboriginal Health Workers in Central Queensland “Gentle Hands” toward the prevention of domestic violence.
