Choosing Specialisation: An Analysis of ACRRM Registrar AST Disciplines
2:10 PM - 2:40 PMAbstract Overview
The ACRRM Fellowship program develops rural generalists with broad skills and expertise in a chosen Advanced Specialised Training (AST) discipline. Understanding the patterns of AST selection is crucial for workforce planning, training pathway development, and ensuring the needs of rural and remote communities are met. This presentation examines the choices of AST disciplines among ACRRM registrars, analysing trends over time. Furthermore, based on their chosen AST, it investigates potential differences in registrar attributes, such as demographics, location, and engagement. The study also explores whether performance indicators during training vary across different AST disciplines. By shedding light on these trends and associations, this research provides valuable insights into the factors influencing registrar specialisation decisions and their potential impact on the future rural generalist workforce. The findings will inform targeted recruitment strategies, curriculum development, and support structures to better align training with the evolving healthcare needs of rural and remote Australia.
