Summary of the Flexible Approach to Training in Expanded Settings (FATES) Programs

3:55 PM - 4:25 PM

Abstract Overview

The Flexible Approach to Training in Expanded Settings (FATES) program funded projects undertaken by the non-GP specialist colleges to develop training programs and pathways for junior doctors in rural and remote areas. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the evaluation reports of some of the innovative projects that were funded under the program. The overview will include how some of the more successful projects operated, and how they may play a role in solving the workforce distribution problems faced in rural and remote areas.
The projects funded under the FATES program offer exciting opportunities for junior doctors to undertake non-GP specialist training in the areas in which they already live and work. This broadens the prospective training opportunities for junior doctors in rural and remote areas, and negates the need to do all (or in some cases most) of their training in metropolitan settings. This presentation is aimed at medical students, interns and residents that have not yet joined a specialist training program to outline some of the opportunities that may be available in the near future.
