Can AI Really Teach Consultation Skills? Seeing Is Believing

10:30 AM - 11:35 AM

Abstract Overview

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical education has grown rapidly in recent years. In particular, the capabilities of generative AI have improved significantly over the past 12 months, making its current applications far more powerful than when it first emerged. Academic literature highlights AI’s potential to enhance clinical reasoning, decision-making, and personalised learning, while acknowledging its limitations, risks, and shortcomings. Amid this evolving landscape, RVTS developed an online AI Role-Play Assistant - an educational innovation designed to support registrar learning. It uses the OpenAI Chat Block in Moodle, connected via a ChatGPT API key, to simulate real-time consultation scenarios.
This workshop demonstrates the application and educational value of the Role-Play Assistant, with a focus on the deliberate practice of communication and consultation skills in general practice. Learners can request custom scenarios (e.g. “I would like to practise a consultation involving an ethical dilemma”), and receive simulated patient responses with feedback.
Participants will trial the assistant first-hand, exploring its immediate, adaptable, and repeatable use. The session will also explore the educational design underpinning its use and aim to expose participants to the power of AI, encouraging them to consider how similar tools might be adapted in other educational contexts.
