Going the Distance: From the Arctic to the Antarctic and Places Between

2:10 PM - 3:15 PM

Abstract Overview

As a Canadian-trained rural and remote family doctor, I have had the privilege of working in remote Arctic communities, with Médecins sans Frontières in conflict zones (Myanmar, South Sudan, Pakistan, search and rescue off the coast of Libya), Western Australia, and even as the doctor for the Antarctic marathon. I’ve dealt with everything from bears on the helipad to juvenile king brown snakes on a maternity ward – and that’s just the animals. Told through both humorous and heartbreaking stories, I will explore the options available to those seeking adventure while providing quality care to equity-owed group. I will also review the extra training I pursued in order to provide the best healthcare possible.
