3D Printing: From Personal Passion to Professional Practice Models
2:55 PM - 3:25 PMAbstract Overview
Delivering hands-on procedural training to rural generalist registrars is often constrained by limited access to realistic models, high equipment costs, and logistical challenges. This presentation describes a practical and replicable case study from RVTS, where hobbyist 3D printing was harnessed to design and produce low-cost, high-fidelity training models for registrar workshops. Motivated by the need for adaptable and accessible educational tools, the team used a combination of open-source files and custom designs created in Fusion 360 to develop anatomical models using commonly available filaments such as PLA and TPU.
The presentation will detail the development of three models: a cricothyroidotomy trainer with a flexible trachea, a shoulder dislocation model, and a suprapubic catheterisation trainer with a silicone-moulded bladder. All were produced using desktop 3D printers and other readily available materials.
These models were tested at RVTS workshops and received positive feedback from facilitators and registrars, who noted their realism and contribution to skill acquisition. The session will outline model development, material selection, and troubleshooting, offering practical guidance for others interested in creating similar tools. This approach addresses budgetary constraints, challenges of timely procurement, and the need for models suited to purpose, providing an affordable, scalable solution for procedural training.
