Respectful workplace culture-building strategies. Respond to discrimination with awareness and effective action.
2:20 PM - 3:25 PMAbstract Overview
In this interactive session, the Respectful Workplaces Committee will explore how everyday behaviours and group dynamics shape workplace culture in rural and remote medical training settings. Participants will be invited to reflect on how silence or a desire to "be nice" may unintentionally enable discrimination, bullying, or harassment. We’ll discuss how uncomfortable emotions—like fear, guilt, or anxiety—can actually serve as valuable signals, prompting us to become more aware and take meaningful bystander action. Together, we’ll examine the challenges of speaking up, including the fear of not fitting in, and share practical strategies for responding to discrimination with awareness, courage, and effectiveness. By engaging in honest discussion, we aim to build a safer, more respectful training environment for all.
