Rural Psychiatry and Training: in support of generalism

Abstract Overview

This presentation will update delegates on the progress made with the RANZCP Rural Roadmap 2021-2031 and the development of Rural Psychiatry Training Pathways, including lessons learnt, outcomes to date and the challenges that lie ahead. The Roadmap outlined the importance of working collaboratively with the National Rural Generalist Pathway in improving access to comprehensive physical and mental health care throughout rural and remote Australia. Opportunities to link and compliment rural psychiatry training with RG training and expansion remain unrealised, however significant opportunities exist with the development of the RANZCP Certificate of Clinical Psychiatry. Ensuring these opportunities are realised in an integrated, collaborative and complimentary way is critical to the development of a sustainable and accessible GP specialist and psychiatry workforce. RPTPs supporting RG training in psychiatry is an essential step in strengthening the medical workforce into rural and remote Australia.
