New Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport

Abstract Overview

There is increasing concern in Australian sport and across the Australian community about sport-related concussion. Sport-related concussion is common. In the vast majority of cases, individuals with a sport-related concussion will make a full recovery, with or without health care practitioner intervention. Some individuals, however, will have complications including associated acute traumatic injuries, prolonged symptoms and delayed return to living and sport activities. An abundance of caution should be exercised when dealing with concussion in youth and community sport environments.

Concussion diagnosis and management will be optimised through
- Clarity of message
- Consistency of message, and
- Strength of position via interorganisational alignment

The role of the healthcare practitioner is critical in the diagnosis and management of concussion, in sport and non-sport settings. This workshop will update participants on recent changes to concussion guidance, use of clinical assessment tools and the role of the healthcare practitioner for optimal concussion recovery in rural and remote settings.
