Advanced Certificate in Rural Generalist Anaesthesia - program review and future development

Abstract Overview

The Advanced Certificate of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia (ACRGA) welcomed its second cohort of trainees in 2024.

This presentation, by three members of the Tripartite Committee for the ACRGA, will focus on:
1: the overall goals of the ACRGA
2: results from the Grandparenting process
3: 2024 trainee demographics
4: summary of assessment outcomes from 2023 and outcomes to date from the 2024 cohort
5: scope and volume of practice for trainees
6: challenges faced during implementation of the ACRGA
7: results of a formal review of the first year of the ACRGA
8: new site accreditation process
9: future initiatives

Biography

Dr Peter Gilchrist has been heavily involved in the development of the ACRGA for the past 6 years. Peter is now the Chairperson for the Tripartite Committee that governs the ACRGA. He is also a State Support Officer for the ACRGA in SA and a Supervisor of Training for the trainee at Whyalla Hospital. Peter works clinically at Port Augusta and Whyalla Hospitals in the mid north of SA and is the Head of the anaesthetics department at Whyalla Hospital. Peter is the Chairperson for the RACGP Rural Anaesthetics Working Group and is the Anaesthetics Advisor to the Rural Generalist Program SA. In his spare time, Peter has research interests into the safety of anaesthesia delivered by rural GPs.

Biography

Dr Claire Arundell is a Rural Generalist Anaesthetist from country Victoria. She is current Chair of the ACRRM College Council and the Victorian representative. She has recently become the ACRRM representative on the TC-RGA after being the recent graduate representative for the past few years. She has many years of practical experience in rural health advocacy roles for various state and national organisations and is passionate about promoting rural health opportunities to future health professionals.

Biography

Consultant anaesthetist providing anaesthesia services in both public and private practice in North West Tasmania since 1999. ANZCA Councillor since 2018. Inaugural Chair of the Tripartite Committee for Diploma Rural Generalist Anaesthesia (DipRGA) and Honorary Treasurer ANZCA. Employed by the University of Tasmania for more than 15 years, including four years as the Codirector of the Rural Clinical School in Northwest Tasmania. Currently Medical Director of the University of Tasmania's, Rural and Regional Training Hub. The role of the hub is to increase specialist training pathways and positions in rural areas. Outside anaesthesia, work interests include medical workforce maldistribution; rural workforce - training, recruitment, and retention; health governance and medical education. Outside Anaesthesia her interests include – cooking, gardening, swimming, windsurfing, snowboarding, golfing and farming.
