“But he’s a nice guy…” – Gendered violence and rural health workshop.

Abstract Overview

This RDAA Female Doctors Group (FDG) workshop aims to discuss gendered violence in all of its potential guises, including coercive control.

Our opening panel will provide information on gendered violence in rural communities, and utilise storytelling to explore its impact on victims, perpetrators, and those around them, especially children.

Workshop participants will consider how caring for those affected in our community impacts on healthcare professionals. We will discuss the challenges of disclosure and how we manage boundaries in our practice. We will consider the needs of healthcare professionals who may be personally affected by gendered violence and what resources are available for their support.

We hope to contribute to the development of a suite of resources for rural health practitioners, both in our caring capacity and also if personally affected.

The RDAA FDG has chosen to bring challenging discussions to RMA in previous years, including exploring medical culture issues such as bullying and sexual harassment. We are aware that this subject matter can be triggering and will take a trauma-informed approach to the presentation of subject matter and facilitation of discussion during this workshop.
