Details

Did you know, only three of Australian's 20 medical schools teach radiation safety, and each year it's estimated that approximately 1000 cancer deaths are attributable to radiation exposure from medical imaging? Research indicates that 20-40% of referrals may be unjustified. In support of radiation safety education, ARPANSA has released an online Radiation Protection of the Patient (RPOP) Module for referrers on radiation safety issues in medical imaging. The content is targeted at GPs, many of whose radiation safety awareness is highly variable. Medical imaging provides the greatest human exposure to ionising radiation and CT examinations are increasing at five times the population growth rate, with research indicating that a significant number of these may not be justified. This session will provide information on radiation safety for medical imaging leading to enhanced radiation protection of the patient. Presenter: Paul Marks, Medical Physicist, Senior Radiation Scientist. * Please Note: (1.5 hours contact) Participation in this session by eligible docs can be counted towards a 'combination' of sessions throughout event for claiming against the Emergency Medicine component of the Procedural Grant .
