This workshop is presented by the National Blood Authority cover symptoms, diagnosis and management of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in general practice. Oral iron replacement is the preferred treatment but for patients who cannot tolerate oral iron there is an iron infusion (ferric carboxymaltose) that is safe to use in the community. The practical safe administration of iron via infusion in the general practice setting for those patients who cannot tolerate oral iron. (*Practical training of insertion of IV cannula will be available). The session will also present the data describing the experience to date (22 patients so far) from the General Practice perspective. ID and IDA is a common condition that can now be managed in the community avoiding hospital based iron infusions. It is cost effective, increases patient satisfaction and enhances the procedural skills of general practitioners. Participants will learn to : 1. recognise the role of managing iron deficiency in patients to improve outcomes and safety; 2. identify the correct iron preparation to use for different patient groups; 3. determine whether administering iron infusions is a suitable treatment in your practice setting. Presenters : Joy Gailer, clinical pharmacist; Dr Daniel Byrne, GP ; Dr Kathryn Robinson, Haematologist
